PHS_WinterPlay_AmazingAmerica_1The Plymouth High School Theatre Department proudly presents “Amazing America” on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the Plymouth High School Auditorium.  It is an annual winter tradition for Plymouth High School students to write the winter play – and this year is no exception.

PHS Winter Play Making patriotic pancakesThis past fall the tradition continued with students choosing a theme, followed by tedious scene writing along with monologues to support the theme. In all, close to 70 students, approximately 30 actors/actresses and 40-stage crewmembers each have a significant role in Amazing America, the first play of the new year!

PHS_WinterPlay_AMazingAmerica_2Amazing America is a comedy about our amazing country and was written by students in the Advanced Acting class. Some of the scenes include:

  • Lewis and Clark battling a skunk
  • Rosie the Riveter dancing to Beyoncé
  • Betty Ross blundering with the first flag
  • The Pilgrim’s landing at Plymouth Rock and meeting the Rockies
  • President James Buchanan doing speed dating
  • Abe Lincoln failing a lie-detector test
  • Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday
  • Michelle Obama preparing healthy food of course

PHS_Winter PLay ColumbusSpecial guest appearances include: Mr. Ken Olson, the PHS Dean of Students, PHS SRO/Plymouth Police Officer Ted Brown and PHS Art Teacher Ms. Haley Church.

Most of the scenes are witty and enchantingly funny but… “America is the land of the free, because of the brave,” so “Amazing America” also pays a serious tribute to our military men and women.

PHS Winter Play Rosie the riveterThe Plymouth High School Theatre Department produces three major plays per school year in the Plymouth High School Auditorium. The PHS Theatre staff, cast and crew, put in close to 40 hours rehearsing prior to opening night to make sure the production moves smoothly.

PHS Winter Play waiting in the wingsPlymouth High School offers students a variety of opportunities to get involved behind the scenes with our technical theater program.  Theater Arts I & II, along with Theater Production I & II introduce students to the theory and practical application of producing a theatrical performance, as well as explore careers in the entertainment industry. Technical Theater I, Advanced Technical Theater II, are classes where students are assigned a specific crew position for each school play. The crews include lighting, sound, scenery, properties, publicity, stage management, house management, theater business management, costumes and makeup.
