The next phase of bringing fiber internet services to the Plymouth community kicked off on Monday, March 28, with a groundbreaking event hosted by project leader Surf Broadband Solutions (“Surf”). The event was held at St. Michael Catholic Church, 612 North Walnut Street in Plymouth. Elected officials, Surf representatives, and community stakeholders were in attendance to celebrate this key milestone.

“The pandemic has highlighted the importance of broadband to our community,” remarked Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter. “The City of Plymouth is pleased to be working with Surf Broadband Solutions to help enable our residents to have access to the broadband tools they need to learn and work while further driving economic development in our region,” he added.

Surf’s multi-million dollar fiber internet infrastructure investment in Plymouth began in June 2021. It was through early discussions with economic development professionals, healthcare administrators, business owners, elected officials, and education leaders that Surf recognized a need for high speed broadband services delivered to homes and businesses in Plymouth.

“In some cases, few or no internet services are available. In others, the traditional phone or cable offerings aren’t keeping pace with the needs of users who rely on their internet connections for supporting a remote workforce, distance learning, work-from-home, video security, et cetera. Surf is committed to serving the Plymouth area with an ultra-high capacity, reliable, fiber optic network that delivers up to a hundredfold increase in capacity over phone or cable lines,” said Surf CEO Gene Crusie.

The entire project has been broken out into 14 phases. Several phases are now through the design and permitting stage, moving on to construction and installation. In addition, Surf has already constructed a fiber optic network to interconnect all of the buildings for Plymouth Community School Corporation.

“I would like to thank Surf Broadband Solutions for enhancing the capabilities of a more widespread and faster broadband service in the Plymouth area. It is more important than ever to have a reliable connection. We appreciate the services Surf Broadband supplies to help our staff, families, and students get connected,” said Plymouth Community School Corporation Superintendent Mitch Mawhorter.

Once completed, an estimated 4,700-plus Plymouth properties will have infrastructure in place and be eligible to connect to Surf’s fiber optic internet services. Surf hopes to have a majority of the work finalized by the end of 2022.
