Jack Jordan state RepSurprise medical bills can be incredibly costly, and this issue impacts hundreds, if not thousands of Hoosiers each year.

Legislation Representative Jack Jordan supported would prohibit health care providers from billing an in-network patient for amounts exceeding in-network rates, which are usually covered by their insurance.

Jordan said, “Surprise billing is when an individual goes to an in-network health care provider for a service, but is seen by an out-of-network physician. The patient then receives a large medical bill not covered by insurance.”  Patients would still be responsible for any deductibles, co-payments and coinsurance amounts. Hoosiers could still opt to receive services from out-of-network providers.

Over 50 percent of all emergency ambulance rides in the United States result in surprise medical billing, and in Indiana approximately 8 percent of all emergency visits have the same result.
