Marshall County Deputy Ryan Hollopeter investigated a collision at U.S. 6 and Michigan Street in LaPaz Thursday morning about 5:30.
21 year old Austin Mahoney of Plymouth was traveling west on U.S. 6 in his 2011 Ford passenger car. As he approached a stopped vehicle that was partially parked in the roadway the driver’s door opened quickly and Mahoney was unable to avoid the collision.
The 2004 Toyota passenger car was driven by an elderly male subject who had run out of gas and opened the door without looking for oncoming traffic.
There were no injuries reported from the collision.
During the investigation, Deputy Ryan Hollopeter discovered that the elderly male had been reported missing the night before by family members in Michigan. He was confused and approximately 170 miles from home. The man was transported to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center of Plymouth to be examined by medical staff and arrangements were made for reuniting him with family.
