Ancilla’s Kainen Lewis had a big day at the plate for the Chargers

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Opening day of Charger Baseball action resulted in a pair of losses for Ancilla, with a first game loss to Garrett Community College by an 8-4 score and falling in game two to Bunker Hill Community College 6-1.

The Chargers jumped out in front early in both games but some key errors in game one and quiet bats in game two were their undoing. Kainen Lewis (Male High School, Louisville) had a three hit day and stole a pair of bases. Alex Nelson (Ben Davis High School) also had three hits and an RBI. Shay Hepler had a pair of hits including an RBI double in game two.

“We had the lead twice the first game and the lead or tied for most of the second game,” said Ancilla head coach Joe Yonto. “We just couldn’t hold on to it.”

Jason Ferguson (Warsaw High School) struck out six and walked two but took the loss in game one on the mound. Dalton Clark (Rockville High School) was perfect in two innings of relief.

Evan VanGordon (Blackford High School) took a no hitter into the fourth in game two but again errors were the downfall of the Chargers as Bunker Hill plated three unearned runs in that frame to clinch the win.

“It was good to get out in a competitive situation,” said Yonto. “We preach that to win we have to pitch, play defense and have timely hitting but we really only had one piece of that today. We’ll get there. That’s really why we are down here (at the Ripken Complex), to get that together.”

Ancilla (0-2) continues their spring trip on Wednesday with games against Chesapeake Community College and Mohawk Valley Community College.
