school newsTuesday morning members of the Marshall County Safety Commission gathered in the conference room of the Plymouth Community School Corporation Administration building.

Area school superintendents joined with representatives of the Indiana State Police, Marshall County Police, Plymouth Police, Marshall County Emergency Management, INDOT, County Highway and probation department.

Plymouth School Superintendent Dan Tyree announced during the meeting that Plymouth schools will consider 3 hour school delays during their October school board meeting as allowed by the state. He explained that with last winter’s excessive missed school days having the opportunity to have a 3 hour delay along with 1 and 2 hour delays would have allowed students and staff to be in the classroom at least two additional days. Tyree pointed out on a fog delay or when it was so cold and the buses didn’t start that those two days would have been ok if there had been a 3 hour delay.

Explaining the use of a 3 hour delay will require and hour extension at the end of the school day. So if school typically starts at 8 and a 3 hour delay is called it would be an 11 a.m. start but students would be required to be in school for an additional hour, till 4 p.m. per the state’s 3 hour delay.

Tyree said it’s not something that he would use a lot but it could be used to save a day or two. At this point he anticipates using it as 3-hours instead of calling a 2 hour delay and then adding on another hour. The superintendent said they have already talked with the after school program, boys and girls club and other groups that would be affected.

Tyree said, “We just thought if we had that in our repertoire we could probably save a couple of days here or there.”
