Where will the City of Plymouth light the Christmas Tree on the Friday evening after Thanksgiving?
During the Urban Forest and Flower Committee meeting Wednesday afternoon members were briefed on the condition of the Christmas tree planted in River Park Square.
The tree had been donated by Price’s Nursery but Tom McGee said the tree droned with the torrential rains in June and the additional watering. He also noted that the heavy clay soil was a determent.
Park Superintendent Mike Hite said the tree should have had a better drainage system. He indicated, “More drainage has been added and we have the sprinklers under control.”
The current tree was planted using a 44 inch tree spade and with the completion of the planter a spade would not be able to get in with out damaging the park to plant another tree.
McGee said Price’s Nursery is willing to donate a tree measuring 10 to 12 feet tall. He estimated weight of the tree with the root ball to be between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds.
Members of the Urban Forest and Flower Committee determined the best thing to do now was to have the park remove the dead tree and at their next meeting review a list of options including a smaller tree donated by Price’s, the purchase of a bigger tree, and the type of evergreen tree that would work best in the planter.
Mayor Senter said, “I’m not opposed to lighting the big tree by Bowen Printing for a couple of years while the new Christmas tree matures.”
