07/10/13 MoonTree Studios invites you to the opening reception for As My Whimsey Takes Me to be held Saturday, July 13, 2013 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. EDT. The work of Patricia Oakley, a fiber artist, will be featured. As My Whimsey Takes Me will be on display at the MoonTree Gallery through August 11, 2013.

Reflecting on her exhibit, Patricia explains her conviction that the life of an adult human can be very serious—all those responsibilities, expectations and chores—it can seem dull and dreary. For this collection of work, she drew upon her childhood—a time when she used to pretend a lot, immersing herself in books and stories to become one of the characters and live in imaginary worlds. She admits that some things never change; she still pretends!

To illuminate her As My Whimsey Takes Me artwork, Patricia quotes Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie, as grown-up Wendy has a conversation with her daughter, Jane:

“Do you know, Jane, I sometimes wonder whether I ever did really fly.”

“Yes, you did.”

“The dear old days when I could fly!”

“Why can’t you fly now, mother?”

“Because I am grown up, dearest. When people grow up they forget the way.”

Patricia says, “In our imaginations we can fly. I hope growing up does not mean forgetting the way. I hope growing up never means ceasing to play and to imagine. In my spinning, knitting, and crocheting, I hope to infuse some play, some imagination, some whimsey.”

Patricia Oakley lives in Goshen, Indiana.
