11/19/10 Sr. Kathleen Dolphin, PBVM and Director of the Center for Spirituality at Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN was on hand as presenter for Ancilla College’s third Lampen Lecture of the academic year, exploring the topic of “Where is God?: Reflections on Creationism, Intelligent Design and Evolution.”
Dolphin used her extensive scientific, theological, and spirituality background to offer a lecture that held true to the Lampen goal of promoting “thinking beyond one’s own experiences and interests.”
According to John Haught, PhD – Dolphin’s mentor – Charles Darwin promoted two “dangerous” ideas in The Origin of Species: all creation is connected and natural selection has allowed species to survive and prosper. The current scientific and cosmic discoveries in the formation of the universe and in the expansion of the universe reinforce these “dangerous” ideas.
“Sister Kathleen showed us with new and logical thinking that science and God are not opposed to one another,” said Sr. Carleen Wrasman, PHJC and Coordinator of Mission Integration and Campus Ministry. “If we as faith filled people believe that God is the creator of the universe, how can true science that studies creation be opposed to God? Sister Kathleen showed very clearly that God plays a compassionate role in all of creation.”
This Lampen Lecture was held in Cana Hall of the PHJC Ministry Center and was a free presentation open to the public.
The series was named for Sr. Joel Lampen, the first president of Ancilla College, who opened the doors of Ancilla to the local community.
The Lampen Lecture Series was designed to combine the universality of the Catholic Church, the international character of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, who sponsor Ancilla College, and the Earth Charter to promote thinking beyond one’s own experiences and interests.
Ancilla College is a Catholic, two-year, co-educational, liberal arts college in Donaldson, Indiana sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ.
