Academy names athletes of the month for January
CULVER – The Culver Academies have named their Athletes of the Month for January.
For the girls hockey standout Abby Marohn was named and for the boys Spencer Watson, also a part of the Academy hockey program was named.
During January, Abbey had a stellar month both in terms of her play on the ice, as well as her development as a leader on the team. Her consistent hard work, preparation, and powerful slap shot help her to be a major factor on the ice both defensively and offensively.
As a very analytical player, she sees the ice well and makes quick decisions, often allowing her to force turnovers. She then distributes the puck quickly and smoothly to her teammates to put them in a good offensive position.
“Her speed and strength allow her additional time to make smart plays, and her work ethic in her off ice training is an excellent example to her teammates,” said head coach Brian Idalski.
Further, she has taken on a mentoring role as a returning player working with younger defenders. She is consistently supportive of her teammates, and often offers advice and encouragement in between shifts, despite playing major minutes in even-handed, penalty kill, and power play situations.
Abby is an invaluable member of the CGA Prep hockey team.
Spencer led the CMA Varsity B Hockey team in scoring with 19 goals and 12 assists on the year, including 4 goals and 1 assist during the month of January.
As an assistant captain he demonstrated quality leadership both on and off the ice, often pulling his line together after practice and drills to review and discuss improvements.
“Spencer has demonstrated an increase in his hockey IQ this season, and constantly strives to better understand the game. As part of the captain staff, Spence keeps meticulous order by sending out the itineraries and game plans for every contest. He makes sure every player knows where and when to be, while setting the mindset for the team,” said head coach Kevin Bowman.
There is no better example of being the “glue” for the Varsity B hockey team than Spence Watson.
