Wythougan Valley Preservation Council will be holding a public meeting on February 2 at 5:30 p.m. at Wild Rose Moon, 115 North Michigan Street in Plymouth. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the current state of historic preservation throughout Marshall County as well as priority landmarks in need of restoration and adaptable use. Light refreshments will be served.
This community conversation on preservation issues is believed to be the first of its kind held in Marshall County and will be conducted as both a presentation and forum for public input. Wythougan has maintained a list of 20 heritage sites that allows the organization to focus on specific buildings as circumstances permit. The public’s thoughts and comments will be part of formulating an updated heritage sites list in May 2017, national historic preservation month.
With the recent acquisition of the Rees Theater by Wythougan, the organization is particularly interested in hearing from the public with regard to desired uses of the theater. Current updates and short-term plans for the theater will be announced at the meeting.
Wythougan Valley Preservation Council was established in 1999. The membership-based organization has completed several National Register nominations and rescued and restored the Garn House in Plymouth, Summit School in Tippecanoe Township, and Jacoby Church near Plymouth. The board of directors is composed of representatives from each of the county’s ten townships. The group has a long partnership with the Marshall County Community Foundation, through which an endowment was established in 2010.
