Pair of Academy swimmers move on

WARSAW – Last weekend at Warsaw High School, CMA Swim, and Dive competed in IHSAA Sectional competition. Overall, the team placed third with a cumulative score of 300.

Advancing to IHSAA Diving Regional competition at Mishawaka High School was Reid Omilian, who placed first overall and bested the Culver 11 Dive record with a score of 385 (record 372.8 by Ben Teaney CMA ’07).

“To my eye, this year’s field of divers was the strongest I’ve seen in my four years of coaching,” said head coach Joshua Brown. “Reid rose to the challenge, and we are very proud of him.”

Junior and team co-captain Fritz Ellert claimed first-place in the 100-yard fly event. The placement advances him to the State Finals this weekend at the IUPUI Natatorium. Ellert trailed the majority of the race by as much as a body-length, but clawed his way back in the second 50 yards and managed to overtake the leader in the last 25 yards.

“Fritz’s race was, hands down, the most exciting individual swim of the night,” said Brown.

Other notable performances of the night included a handful of CMA freshmen, who as a group were the fastest freshmen class of this Sectional. Zixuan Chen managed to shave .6 of a second off of his 200 individual medley (IM) time, while Cabot Ellert dropped an entire second off of his IM time. Lastly, Jacob Maibach shed time in both the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, taking eighth place and was the only freshmen to the podium in both events.
