Early Wednesday morning Plymouth Police Officers were dispatched to East Garro and Water Streets to an unknown situation. Arriving on the scene about 2:30 officers encountered a male subject wielding a knife and a hatchet.
The male subject, later identified as 26 year old Matthew Obrien of Plymouth had battered another male subject with the hatchet prior to police arrival.
Obrien attempted to harm himself with the knife and police deployed a taser. The taser was only semi-effective because one of the prongs hit a leather knife sheath Obrien was wearing. Obrien maintained possession of his weapons and took off running towards the Yellow River. He then jumped into the Yellow River in an attempt to avoid being taken into custody.
Obrien was found and taken into custody. He received medical attention at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth and was then lodged in the Marshall County Jail for Battery with a Deadly Weapon and Resisting Law Enforcement. He was held on a $1,500 cash bond.
