Triton logoThe Triton School Board held a short meeting on March 11; but handled a number of items.

The board approved the purchase of new garage doors for the bus garage. Superintendent Jeremy Riffle said damage over a number of years has made it necessary to replace them.

They also approved the purchase of 325 Chromebooks for Triton High School. Near the end of the meeting, a high school student questioned why the internet speed at the school had become slower. Riffle said they noted the slowdown and found that the HP Computers that were seven years old were causing the slowdown and that the decision was to replace them with Chromebooks sooner than anticipated.

Riffle asked for approval to upgrade the signage at the high school that has faded over the years. He said the new signage would be designed to go with the market branding of the Triton Schools and the updates will be more appealing. According to Riffle, the next phase will be to install signage in the auxiliary gym

A request for approval of painting quotes was added to the agenda so that painting in the locker rooms and bathrooms could be done over the spring break. Riffle said they had not advertised for quotes, but did receive three quotes as necessary for projects over $5,000. After the meeting, Riffle said the low quote approved was $5,800.

All the requests were approved on a vote of 4-0. Board member Ken Miller was absent from the meeting.

Students attending the meeting had additional questions concerning the shortening of study halls and how it would affect the tutoring sessions that some students hold at the elementary school. Riffle explained that there were some 40-60 students in a study hall and that the use of SLC (Student Learning Communities) would provide a more focused supervision. He went on to say that teachers see 80-100 students each day and the SLC groups would help students make more efficient use of their time and allow teachers to provide extra help.

The school makeup days to meet the state’s requirement for instruction time were set by the Triton School Board for April 4 and June 3-5. Riffle said graduation will be on June 9 as originally placed on the calendar.
