County News # 1During Monday’s Marshall County Commissioner’s, Jason Peters, Supervisor of the Highway Department told the commissioners he met with FEMA last week as part of the county’s flood relief fund.  He said the county had 60 days to submit their detailed report of damages.

Peters said, “For the county going through the process for the first time FEMA was pretty happy with everything we had gotten done as far as information wise and documentation.”

Peters presented a letter he received from the FEMA contractor he worked with and Kevin Overmyer asked Peters to read the letter during the meeting.

“It was a pleasure meeting you, Stephanie and Denise yesterday at your Recovery Scoping Meeting where we discussed the Highway Departments Damages from the FEMA declared Flooding event. I was VERY impressed with the amount of detail that you all provided seeing as this was the first time for you and your Clerk and Assistant Clerk. I think I’ll recommend that others call your Department if they have any questions as to what information is needed. I have done FEMA Disasters from all over, as far East as Long island, New York, West to California, South to St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, North to Anchorage Alaska and everywhere in between. Having all of the right information makes things go much more quicker. Keep up the good work.”

Commissioner Overmyer told Peters, “Good job on presenting all the information to them.”

Peters said, “It’s kind of intimidating sitting when you sit with them.”  The other commissioners did not comment on the letter.”

During Monday’s meeting Commissioner Overmyer asked Commissioners Mike Delp and Kurt Garner their thoughts on the recommendation from Waggoner, Irwin & Sheele, the county’s HR consultants to make Peters the Interim Superintendent of the Highway Department.  He also them if they had given any thought to getting Peters some back pay.

Commissioner Garner said he felt it was a personnel issue and should be discussed in an executive session.  He suggested meeting later this week and going to the County Council next Monday. He said, “This is a fairly substantial change in how the structure works. The council would end up doing away with two positions now and creating one so I feel like it’s a personnel issue.”

Commissioner Delp echoed his thoughts and commented that the memo from the HR Consultants reminded the commissioners of the job classification compensation analysis currently being performed may result in further pay adjustments based on the design of the new county wide compensation plan.

Commissioner Overmyer told the other commissioners he would be out of town Thursday through Sunday.

No action was taken on setting an executive session prior to the July 11th County Council meeting.
