JACKSON, MI – The Ancilla men’s soccer team claimed a weekend victory over Owens Community College in overtime, 3-2.
“It was a gritty contest,” said Coach Dave Jacobs. “We came out of the gates today firing.”
The Chargers came out and hit the cross bar in the first thirty second on a shot by Romario Piggott. It then took Ancilla 27 minutes to find the game’s first goal on an assist from Miguel Zavala to Yaret Regino leading to a 1-0 halftime. In the second half, Owens was able to get an early goal in the 55th minute only to be answered by Shamar Wright’s goal 40 seconds later on an assist by Piggott for the Chargers. However, in a defensive lapse by Ancilla, Owens was able to score the tying goal in the 77th minute.
The tying goal from Owens, would lead both team to overtime play for the second time this year. Eight minutes into the first sudden death round, Lee Nicholson found Kevin Mendoza for the game winning goal.
“This game proves that if we want it bad enough, we can score at will,” said Jacobs. “We need to be more aggressive in our defensive third. This was the cause of both of Owens goals. However, the guys responded to our talk before the sudden death overtime and came out ready to win.”
“We played a disciplined game and that proved to make the difference,” continued Jacobs. “Owens received a total of six yellow cards to our one and that really showed that our guys have the mindset to play in a very chippy game and keep our cool. I was very proud of the team today. They stayed disciplined and got the job done.”
The Chargers will be on the road at Muskegon Community College Wednesday. Game times 4:00p.m. The team will return home Friday to take on Cuyahoga Community College at4:00p.m.
