IMG_2195The Plymouth Varsity began their season today as defending champions of the Goshen Invitational.  Reloading with three new faces from a year ago, the Pilgrims fired a 321 good for 2nd out of 14 teams.  NLC foe Northridge finished first with an impressive 307!  Attached full results.

The Varsity was lead in scoring by senior Ben Schenk, out 37, in 38 = 75.  Ben’s ball striking, 11 greens in regulation, and steady putting was a constant all day.  His play in a group that featured a field low 73 and a likewise 75 made for some great theater on a sun soaked afternoon at Maplecrest CC in Goshen.
Sophomore Micah Calhoun fired a career best 79, out 43 in 35.  Micah’s ability to bear down on the back nine was a lesson in persistence and maturation.  Rounds like this will go a long way to Micah’s gaining of experience and will serve as a great building block.
Like Micah, senior Reis Yoder fought through some early trouble on the front nine to improve greatly on the back, out 44, in 37 = 81.  Like his teammates, Reis found his focus and tempo in the second half of his round and posted a respectable number.
Following suit with his teammates, Freshman John Schenk, shook off some nerves and improved on the second nine, out 45, in 41 = 86.  Sophomore Hudson Yoder flipped the script getting hot early and cool late, out 41, in 53 = 94.

Most impressive for the team was their ability to settle down and improve from the front to the back nine – 192 first nine – 168 second nine.
Playing as markers for Plymouth – Sophomore Tyler Newton 113 – Senior Pietro Bologna 126.
Both teams are back in action Tuesday at Plymouth Country Club where they face off against always tough Mishawaka Marian and local foe Bremen.
