Ancilla Softball Splits with #16 SSC

DONALDSON, INDIANA – The Ancilla College softball team split a doubleheader against NJCAA #16 South Suburban College, winning the first game 3-2 and losing the second game 3-1.
Abbey Renner picked up the complete game victory for Ancilla in the first game, striking out four and scattering five hits along the way.
The Chargers scored all of their runs in the second inning. Tori Newsome led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on an infield error off the bat of Kayte Miller. After one out in the inning Mariah Miller ripped a single to center to score Newsome. One out later, Brooke Stout laced a double to center to score Kayte Miller. Kayla Smith followed that up with an RBI single of her own to plate Mariah Miller. Smith finished the game with two hits for the Chargers. South Suburban scored individual runs in the sixth and seventh to tighten the Ancilla lead.
Kayte Miller broke up the South Suburban perfect game in the nightcap with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the fifth inning. It would prove to be Ancilla’s only hit and run in the contest that saw the visiting Bulldogs score in the second, third, and seventh innings.
“I was proud of the effort in both games,” said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “Both teams capitalized on opportunities and had a chance to win either game. Abbey did a great job in the circle and Kayla and Kayte had good days at the plate. This is a big stretch coming up for us over the next seven days and will go a long way in determining our fate in the conference.”
Ancilla returns to Michigan Community College Athletic Association play to end the week. They will travel to Kellogg, Kalamazoo Valley, and Grand Rapids on ThursdayFriday, and Saturday. Ancilla will return home on Monday and Tuesday to double headers against Lansing and Jackson.
