TUCSON, ARIZONA – After starting the season 3-0, the Ancilla softball team lost two games on their spring trip, losing 5-0 to Northeastern Junior College and 5-1 to Lamar Community College.

In the opener, Ancilla was shutout for the first time this season and held to five hits. The Chargers committed six errors in the game. Abbey Renner’s record dropped to 3-1 on the season, allowing just one earned run and striking out two. Morgan Peoni had two hits for Ancilla.

“You’ve got to score to win,” began Ancilla coach Scott Reese. “We had our opportunities, but didn’t execute when the moment arose. The six errors didn’t help either.”

The nightcap, saw Ancilla take the lead in the top of the first. Allena McElfresh started off the game with a single to center, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Peoni, then moved to third on a Brittany Probasco single. McElfresh then stole home when Lamar made a play on Probasco at first during Renner’s at bat. The Chargers scattered seven hits. Probasco finished the game 3-3. Renner struck out nine in the loss.

“We did a better job of executing against Lamar,” said Reese. “We at least got people in scoring position, we just didn’t get the clutch hits we needed.”

Ancilla (3-2) takes on North Cental Missouri College and Douglas College tomorrow.
