appeals-on-wheelsIndiana’s second highest court will conduct oral argument at the Culver Academies on Thursday, March 12 at 6:30 p.m. The argument, in the Heritage Room of Legion Memorial Building, is open to the public and will last about one hour.

A panel of Judges John G. Baker, Patricia A. Riley and Margret G. Robb will hear Marsh v. State, a criminal case on appeal from Vanderburgh County. The judges will answer student questions after the argument, but not about this case.

The Court’s visit coincides with Culver’s 2015 Ethical Decision-Making Weekend, based on the theme of “Mindsets and Managing our Moral Decisions.” Judge Baker (Culver Military Academy, 1964), Judge Riley and Judge Robb will visit Culver classrooms on Friday, March 13.

The Court of Appeals hears oral arguments across Indiana to enable Hoosiers to observe the court in action and learn more about its indispensable role in Indiana government. Appeals on Wheels closely matches Indiana academic standards for U.S. Government, which asks high school students to demonstrate their understanding of due process, judicial review, and an independent judiciary. The program also comports with College Board standards for Advanced Placement History.

The court has conducted more than 400 “Appeals on Wheels” events since its 2000-2001 centennial. This argument marks the court’s fifth Appeals on Wheels event this year.
