A report on ENL and Migrant students from Jeni Hirschy had a familiar ring-funding cuts led to cutting the number of staff members this school year. Hirschy said they used to have both teachers and aides in each building in the corporation to work with the ENL and migrant population, but now there is only funding for teachers. She said Title III funding that had just been approved will allow the hire of an aide at Plymouth High School.

Funding for the programs comes from Title I-Part C-Migrant; non English Speaking Program; Title III, and corporation dollars.

Currently there are 36 students at Jefferson Elementary; 61 at Menominee Elementary; 103 at Washington Elementary; 44 at Webster Elementary; 108 at Riverside Intermediate; 90 at Lincoln Junior High School and 140 at Plymouth High School who qualify for services. Their skill levels range from limited or no English proficiency to fluent English proficiency.

Hirschy said they were able to provide services to migrant children during their summer programming. She said they enrolled in the summer reading program at the Plymouth Public Library, attended summer school for ten days with the corporation offerings; held kindergarten readiness classes, and even held on-site classrooms at the Red Rock Inn. Hirschy said, “The influx of families stay at the Red Rock in the summer.” Some children were able to attend Camp Discovery at Riverside Intermediate.
