11/14/13 Ancilla student Shelly Day of Knox was honored with the 24th annual “Realizing the Dream” scholarship.
Day, a sophomore, is the first in her family to attend college and was selected because of her outstanding achievement during her freshman year. Day chose Kristin Korcha, chair of the science, math, & technology division at Ancilla College as her most influential teacher.
“Shelly Day’s drive, persistence, and optimism make her a perfect award recipient, and I am honored to teach her as she excels at Ancilla College. Ancilla offers first-generation college students unsurpassed opportunities, one-on-one attention, and dedication to individualized learning unlike any other,” said Korcha.
“Realizing the Dream” is a $2000 scholarship to help with college costs, made possible by a grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. First-generation students who attend an Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) school are eligible. The student’s most influential teacher or mentor also receives a $1000 check.
ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents the state’s 31 nonprofit accredited colleges and universities. ICI member institutions enroll some 87,000 students (approximately 22 percent of all students statewide) and annually produce 35 percent of all bachelor’s degrees in Indiana.
