Finishing Touches on Destiny’s Dream

May 12, 2011

05/13/11 A Young Ailing Plymouth girl will soon be able to realize her dream to finally have a bedroom of her own.

About a hal-dozen volunteers were at 11-year-old Destiny Cartwright’s home this past weekend priming and painting the walls of a new addition to the family’s home.

Destiny is suffering from congestive heart failure brought on by a case of rheumatic fever.  This has left her unable to easily go up and down the stairs to the bedroom she shares with her two brothers. At some point in the future, Destiny may have to undergo heart valve replacement surgery and sure is currently has to take a number of medications to keep her health from getting worse. Her case caught the attention of Plymouth Kiwanis and the Make A Wish Foundation.

Kiwanis of Plymouth and a group of skilled construction workers led by Keith Woods of Lowe’s in Plymouth have come forward to help give Destiny her dream of having a bedroom of her own. Work began in early April to build a two bedroom, one bath addition to the family’s 6th Road home in Plymouth. This will give Destiny a room of her own and also allow her parents, Mike and Mewsette, to be nearby.

The new addition is now nearly complete with just some minor painting and trim work left to be completed. Once that is done, the Make A Wish Foundation will step in and completely furnish and decorate Destiny’s room just the way she wants it.

Much of the materials and all of the labor for the addition project is being donated, but there are still quite a few items that have to be paid for.  Many generous donations have been sent in, but more money is needed to completely finance the estimated $15,000 that is needed to finish the project.

If you would like to make a cash donation to the project, you can do so by stopping by Lake City Bank (862 E Jefferson, Plymouth) and making your check out to “Kiwanis Destiny’s Wish.” Donations for Destiny’s Wish may also be sent to: Kiwanis-Destiny’s Wish, P.O. Box 504, Plymouth, IN 46563.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. The Plymouth Kiwanis meet each Tuesday at noon at Christo’s Banquet Center in Plymouth and interested people and/or potential new members are always welcome.
