Students in the Health Science Program at Plymouth High School, recently returned from the HOSA State Leadership Conference that was held in Indianapolis. HOSA stands for Health Occupations Students of America, the original name for the organization, but in 2004 the organization changed the official name to name to Future Health Professionals; however, they still use the HOSA acronym to recognize the organization.
Emily Cochren, one of the of 11 students who attended the HOSA Leadership Conference, placed fifth in Medical Assisting, Felicia Dixon placed in the top ten for Behavioral Health Knowledge test, and Felicia Dixon and Zoelle Zellers placed within the top twenty for Health Career Display-Mental Health Nursing. Health Careers Instructor Jona Cartwright, B.S.N., R.N., said she is proud of all of her students whether they place or not. “Attending the conference really puts into perspective current health care issues for our students, but not only that, environmental concerns, and survival needs of the community, the state and the country. The event highlights involvement in local, state and national health care, and education projects. It also helps our students develop effective leadership qualities and skills,” said Cartwright.
Four students will be attending the HOSA National Leadership Conference in Orlando in June; Brittany Culp and Mikayla Sommers of Plymouth High School and Abby Schmidt and Elisha Cripe of John Glenn High School. Health Careers Instructor Jona Cartwright, B.S.N., R.N., said, “They will hopefully be part of the Courtesy Corp, which consists of timing events, being runners for events, acting as patients for clinical events, being greeters during general sessions, and helping with directions for students who are having trouble finding event rooms”.
Health Science Program taught at Plymouth High is part of the North Central Area Vocational Cooperative (NCAVC), which consists of ten surrounding school corporations. Students who successfully complete two years of the program can earn 11 dual college credit hours, and get their CNA and CPR certifications.
