MC SportsIt’s official.  MC Sports in Plymouth has confirmed the store is closing.

Social media was abuzz with comments on Tuesday and the corporate headquarters of MC Sports in Grand Rapids made it official Tuesday afternoon with a news release.

Local store manager Joe Walker, who’s been with the company for 13 years said he was officially notified on Monday.  He said, “Essentially in a nut shell, all stores are closing, not just the Plymouth location.”  He noted that this year’s winter weather was less than desirable for outdoor activities like skiing, ice skating and sledding saying sales were way down.  Walker also noted, “E-commerce has killed retail in general.”

The current sales running at the store will continue until a liquidation company is hired to oversee the final liquidation of merchandise at all locations.

Walker noted that gift cards customers may have on hand are still good but should be used in the near future.  He also said the stores are not selling an additional gift cards.

Shoppers will still be able to purchase their sporting goods Monday through Saturday from 9 to 9 and Sunday from 10 till 6.

The regional sporting goods chain opened in Plymouth just 15 months ago in a portion of the former K Mart store in the Pilgrim Place Shopping Center.  Currently there are 18 full and part-time employees from management to high school students.
