Yellowstone Trail 2016Several students of Oregon-Davis High School will be expanding their learning of history this year by impersonating figures from the 1920’s as part of the entertainment for this year’s Yellowstone Trail Fest August 20th & 21st in Hamlet at the Starke County Fair Grounds.  There will also be a 1920’s Fashion Show presented by the Dazzling Divas Red Hat Society.

Blending activities during the historical time frame of the conceiving of the Yellowstone Trail allows more to learn of the amazing history behind this project.  Be sure and take a ride on the covered wagon and learn how the ruts being left from these wagons are why the 1919 Trail Route Folder was created. Come look at the Draft Horse “hitch-wagon” show to observe the huge hooves and wheels of the 3mph mode of transportation before the automobile was just becoming popular. And why the intercity roads were plagued with sand, potholes, mud and dangers.

Credit has to be mentioned here for J.W. Parmley, of South Dakota.  Although, national parks were established in 1872, it wasn’t till 1916 that National Park Service was created.  The very first automobile drove thru Yellowstone Park in 1915, and J.W. thought if he could create a map of the best roads to get there from Plymouth Rock to Pugent Sound, he could increase the commerce in his town dramatically.

Parade entries for the Yellowstone Trail Fest are encouraged to fill out and mail or drop off their entries at Gro Your Own Garden Supplies by August 15th.  Judging will be done in line at 1:30 on Sunday, Aug, 21 with the 1920’s theme as judging criteria or as a “Bison-centennial” year for the State of Indiana.
