Roof construction and building restoration at First United Methodist Church (FUMC) on Michigan Street has been completed and the congregation is inviting everyone to enter through their open doors on Sunday, April 28 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. for a Community Open House.

The church’s long history in Plymouth began over 187 years ago when a circuit-riding pastor back in 1836 organized the first gathering. In 1915 the congregation dedicated their present building, a pristine columned showpiece of a church atop Plymouth’s downtown. The building and congregation stood the test of time, even through the infamous 1976 tornado. However, an improper roof repair following that storm began a sequence of events that eroded the roof structure.

In 2019 it was discovered that the beautiful dome that created amazing acoustics in the sanctuary was dangerously sagging inward, and the congregation was forced to vacate the entire building until repairs could be made. The roof was immediately secured with interior pillars filling the sanctuary where the pews had previously been. However, it would be several years before a design for adequate repairs could be completed, approvals received, and contractors engaged. In the meantime, a water heater started leaking over a weekend in the lower level, creating flood conditions that necessitated a myriad of work in the lower level as well as repairs to the structure and the sanctuary.

After almost five years, all the necessary repairs and restoration have been completed, including structural changes, plaster repair, fresh paint, new carpet, and updated technology; and now the gorgeous dome is securely supported above the worship area once more. On the lower level new drywall, flooring, painting, and decorating is complete.

It took the cooperation of several contractors, suppliers, and many volunteers from the congregation to be able to open the doors again. That glorious day arrived on Palm Sunday.  With all the pomp and circumstance of the season, and maybe a little extra. The FUMC church members enjoyed a procession through the front doors of the church and into their beloved church building. Grateful to God to be “back home”.

With great pride, the First United Methodist Church is now able to fling open its doors and welcome the community to an open house. Please stop by 400 N Michigan Street on Sunday, April 28 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to see the restored facility and a showcase of what the congregation offers.  There will be tours, refreshments, and even some giveaways.

At 2:00 p.m. there will be a brief service of appreciation for all volunteers, contractors, and suppliers who assisted in making the church’s foundation secure once again. The FUMC congregation hopes to see you there.
