Saturday, September 4, at 10 PM a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle at Veterans Parkway and Michigan Road by Officer Krynock of the Plymouth Police Department.

The driver initially stopped and while Officer Krynock was speaking to him about the reason for the stop and his identification, he placed the vehicle in gear and fled from the stop.

A pursuit ensued north on US 31 and 931. The pursuit ended at Johnson Road and Linden Road in South Bend where the driver lost control of his vehicle and went off the roadway.

The driver was taken into custody and identified as Markey L. Smallwood, 23 of South Bend. He was transported to the Plymouth ER for medical clearance and incarcerated in the Marshall County Jail for Resisting Law Enforcement with a vehicle and held on a $1,500 cash bond.

Readers are reminded that charging information supported by an affidavit of probable cause is merely an allegation that a crime has been committed and that there is only probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. They are presumed innocent throughout the proceedings and are entitled to be represented by counsel and entitled to a trial jury at which the State is obligated to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt before a judgment of guilt may be made.
