County News # 1Mike Marshall, the County’s IT Director told the County Commissioners he wants to increase his budget request by $42,000 next year to “harden the county’s defense on ransom ware.”

During his quarterly report Marshall said LaPorte County was a victim and ended up paying over $130,000 between county funds and their insurance protection.

While the county has stayed up-to-date with their antivirus protection to help keep up with ransom ware, Marshall said his request would upgrade the email protection.

The commissioners also discussed looking into insurance coverage for such an attack.

During his quarterly report Marshall also said the phone upgrade to VOIP by Hyperwave is nearly complete.  He said the county should be done with Century Link by the end of the year.
