REES backPhase III construction continues with something that is actually visible to the public. It began in early June with the installation of 10 helical piers that were driven down along the north foundation of the 1939 extension of the building to the alley as well as a short portion of the east wall along the alley. Randy Danielson said, “This settling occurred shortly after the building opened and continued over the course of time. This was something that we were aware of and had budgeted for. It is now a stable building in that regard and allows for further masonry repairs to begin.”

On August 9th they will begin taking down the entire east alley wall and rebuild it over the next two weeks. Originally only cement block repairs to this wall were considered but with the amount of re-work it was decided that a complete re-build would provide for greater overall integrity, aesthetic look for the community and resets for the electric panel and gas meter.

NIPSCO engineering and construction crews have been very instrumental in preparing for this needed improvement. For the protection of the masonry crew working on lifts, the power has been re-routed behind the theater and line protectors installed.

In addition, the entire south wall elevation will receive attention with tuck-pointing, infill of the ventilation access door and removal of deteriorated concrete wainscot and repair of underlying brick.

There will be some general concrete demo throughout the interior of the building and preparation for the storage/orchestra pit area under the new performance stage.

Prior to the installation of the new roof in October, the steel beams to support the new balcony will be brought through the old roof by use of a crane.

New water and sewer service entrances to the building will be installed prior to the expected completion of Phase III work by November 1st.

It is hoped that with funding in place work will continue into the interior – Phase IV. This portion is expected to take 11 to 13 months and is dependent on the schedule of a general contractor.

Donors may still provide funds through the Marshall County Community Foundation…at their new address or contacting Randy Danielson at 574-286-2391.www.reesproject.com

Danielson closes his comments saying, “We should learn about our OCRA grant funding on August 15th.”

The next fundraising project for the REES is being held on Thursday, August 22nd from 11 – 1 pm through the generosity of the Coffee Lodge with a Pulled Pork Sandwich sale.  Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any REES committee member or at Bowen Printing.
