school-board-meeting1With the start of the school year on Wednesday, August 7, the number of students walking and riding buses to Plymouth schools each day makes it vital that motorists stay alert. During the September meeting of the school board, Superintendent Andy Hartley said, “Our bus drivers and transportation department have completed their annual safety training and have gone through their routes.”

Hartley went on to thank 1st Source Bank for providing light-up tags that student attach to their backpacks. The lights help to keep students more visible as they are walking or waiting for buses to arrive.

Also during the meeting, Ted Brown, Director of Safety and Security, told the board that area law enforcement agencies have received a grant that will make it possible to have more officers to enforce traffic stops when school buses have the stop arm in use. He said the grant could also be used to allow officers to do ride-a-longs on buses. Brown said the newer busses in use have been equipped with cameras.

Brown said they have put together a reunification package that could be used if students needed to be relocated and parents need to be notified. Brown said they had identified two sites previously that could be used including the Plymouth Wesleyan Church and the Zone property.
