Plymouth continues to be the kind of town that attracts young families, especially those who grew up in the community. Blake Olson graduated in 2002 from Plymouth High School and headed to Valparaiso University to study accounting and finance and earned his undergraduate degree.
However, while taking his grandmother to the chiropractic clinic of the late Dr. John Bottorff in Plymouth, he began to consider another type of career. Olson said, “He helped my grandmother and me so much and I wanted to help people in the same way.” According to Olson, Dr. Bottorff mentored him and even wrote letters of recommendation for him that led to his acceptance to the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He later transferred to the Texas Chiropractic Clinic in Pasadena, Texas.
While completing his training in Texas, he was a volunteer for both the Rice University’s football team and the University of Texas, where he cared for many veterans. Olson said, “One of the most memorable experiences was serving as an assistant chiropractor at the 2015 World Weight Lifting Championships.”
Three years ago, he moved his wife Joy and newborn son Charles to Plymouth to be nearer grandparents and other family. After commuting for nearly three years to Michigan City to practice in a clinic, he felt it was time to open his own practice in 2018 at 1526 West Jefferson Street in Plymouth.
While at Valparaiso University, he met his future wife Joy who is originally from China. She was at the university to obtain her master’s degree in International Commerce and Policy. She then went on to earn a second master’s in Information Technology. She is now a senior pricing analyst for Follett in Chicago. The company runs book stores for several major universities.
Both Blake and Joy Olson were part of a group working to open the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University. The Institute recruits teachers who are placed in schools to teach the Chinese language to American students.
Olson said they were married in the Plymouth area and then traveled to China for a second wedding with Joy’ school family and friends. He said, “We are now very lucky to have Joy’s mother live with us part of the year and be near Charles.”
Olson said he is pleased to see patients at his clinic, Olson Chiropractic Health Center, and to live in a caring community.
