Frozen water pipesDonnie Davidson, Superintendent of Utilities in the City of Plymouth has issued some advice for city customers but is definitely a good idea for everyone in the city and county.

Due to the severe cold weather forecast for the next few days, the following are few tips for preventing water lines from freezing for our City of Plymouth Water customers:

  1. Make sure you can locate your main water shut off valve. This is normally where the water line enters the home or business or by the water meter. This is important so that if you do have a frozen pipe and it bursts you can shut the water off before it does major damage.
  2. Have all exterior basement doors, basement windows, crawl space vents, etc. closed tightly and all drafts eliminated.
  3. If your water lines to your sink, wash machine, etc. is located on an exterior wall, open the cabinet doors so that the heat can circulate around the piping. This especially important during the evening hours when water usage in the home is at its lowest.
  4. You can also insulate or install heat tape on the piping.
  5. You can let your water run a small stream about the size of a pencil lead (slightly more than a frequent drip). Please be aware there is no credit for the water/wastewater usage on your monthly bill if you chose this method.
  6. Make sure all exterior spickets are off and hoses are disconnected.
