golf-course-dedication-1923-011 (1)The rich history of golf in Culver will be explored at “Culver at the Fore!”, a presentation by Culver Academies Museum and Archives Manager Jeff Kenney on Saturday, Aug. 18, starting at 10 a.m.

 

HAGEN, WALTER - 1926 CULVER GOLF (1)The event, which will take place at the Culver Academies Golf House on State Road 117 (East Shore Drive) in Culver, is sponsored by the Antiquarian and Historical Society of Culver and is free and open to the public. 

walter hagen at culver golf course (1) (1)Via multimedia images and video, Kenney will focus primarily on the genesis and evolution of the 1923-designed Culver Military Academy (today’s Culver Academies) course, which was the original handiwork of legendary course designers Langford & Moreau, and which was restored to its original design specifications via a thorough project in 2016 by the school. Since then, the course has been described as one of the best 9-hole courses in the world and was featured in the new book, “The Finest Nines” by golf historian Anthony Pioppi.

Kenney will also examine the early golf legacy of the Maxinkuckee Country Club course, which began circa 1908, and the Mystic Hills course, whose legendary designer, Pete Dye, has longtime Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee connections.
