The Great Lakes Super Sprints made their second appearance this season at Plymouth Speedway Saturday Aug. 4. Thirty winged sprint cars from Indiana, Michigan and Ohio along with a couple from Ontario, California and Florida were on hand for an exciting 25 lap feature.

HorstmanpassTwenty cars took the green flag with Danny Sams III starting on the pole with Kyle Poortenga along side.  A relatively green flag race with just one incident lead to a lot of side by side racing for the lead and through the field. The 24D of Sams lead early with the 17 of Jared Horstman and 28 of Phil Gressman making steady progress up to the second and third spot from their eight and sixth starting spots when the yellow flag came out. The restart put Horstman and Gressman on Sams bumper with no lapped traffic in-between. Right from the restart Horstman slid past into the lead in the first set of turns with Gressman following through. When the checkers fell that is how they finished Horstman, Gressman and Sams on the podium.

SprintPodiumThe UMP modifieds featured 15 cars in the Main with Micheal Thayer on the pole. Devin Wright started outside in the front row with Derek Losh behind him in fourth. Losh didn’t waste anytime in getting to the front and running away from the field. Wright, Thayer, Frank Marshall and Zeke McKenzie were left to battle it out for second.

On the original start Thayer had difficulty coming up to speed and dropped like a rock through the field getting hit several times before coming to a stop on the track. On the second restart with the field readjusted with Thayer out Losh got to the lead and was gone lapping up to the eighth position before a yellow lined the field back up. The battle for second through fifth was a spirited back and forth with Wright finishing in second and McKenzie grabbing the last spot on the podium.

LoshWrightKettnichLosh has a 271 point lead over Matt Mitchell with Dylan Woodling 81 points behind Mitchell.

Full fender Thunder Stocks lined up 21 cars for the feature with eight taking the time shortened checkers. Kevin Kerlin started on the pole and finished on top of the podium with Austen Hubbard in second. Chad Mclean started 14th but through a combination of green flag passes and a lot of attrition he finished in third.

600 Mini-Sprints had two A Features, the second being a make-up race from the opening night of Sprint week that was rained out as the class lined up for their Feature.

The first feature race started 20 with Austin Turner and Brenton Lamb on the front row. Andrew Cockman started fifth got into the lead early in the event and ran a near flawless race keeping Brenton Lamb at bay on the restarts. Lamb was able to keep a hard charging Cody Williams, who started eleventh, battling with Nick Schaefer with Chad Hartzell lurking in fifth looking for an opening.

In the make up feature the field was slightly different with Kyle Gunkel starting on the pole with Cockman on the front row looking to make it two features in one night.

Gunkel and Cockman battled for several laps back and forth until Cockman broke a front end part and ended up falling through the field until he expired a couple of laps later.

Garrett Wagoner took advantage of this battle at the field to make big gains through the field from his 15th starting spot. Wagoner, Gunkel and Cody Williams went on to trade positions amongst themselves racing hard with each other. When the checkers flew Wagoner was in the lead followed closely by Gunkel and Williams.

Riley Children’s Hospital Night is Saturday, Aug. 11 featuring the five points classes with the added feature of Front Wheel Drives. The Kenny Wallace Driving Experience will be at the track Sunday Aug. 12 offering an opportunity to turn laps in a dirt car.

Saturday, Aug. 18 is the Championship Night the final points night.
