Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century achieved success as a published writer.

The plots of Austen’s books often explored the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favorable social standing and economic security. Her works include Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815).  She also wrote two additional novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818.

In celebration of her life, the Plymouth Public Library will host a couple events to honor the 200th anniversary of her death.  On July 18th they will read and discuss her novel, “Pride and Prejudice.”  Tea and scones will be served during the event from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Laramore Room of the library.

On Saturday, July 22nd the Plymouth Public Library will show “Pride and Prejudice” in the Laramore meeting room from noon until 2 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served during the viewing.

There is no charge to attend either event.
