Miller's_k-9 Dogs june 2017Staff and residents of Miller’s Assisted Living Community enjoy giving back to the community.  One of the events the like to plan are monthly luncheons to help various organizations in the Marshall County community.  In the past they have been able to help the Marshall County Humane Society, the Plymouth Parks Day Camp, St. Thomas Episcopal Non-Food Pantry, Hello Gorgeous, and several others.

During the month of June Miller’s chose to help the city and county K-9 Police Officer Programs.  Guests were asked to either bring gift cards from Smith Farm Store or tennis balls for the K-9’s or they could pay for their meal with the proceeds going to the police agencies.

Plymouth Police Officer John Weir with K-9 officer JAX and Marshall County Deputy Brandon Cooper with K-9 officer Arras made and appearance at the luncheon to visit with guests and residents.  Many tennis balls were collected for the dogs as well as monetary donations.

Officer Weir explained that the dogs are not given many food treats.  But they do enjoy chewing on and playing with their tennis balls.  The tennis ball is their reward for good behavior.  Weir admits that Jax does get a “greenie” once in a while but not too often.

Training and up keep of a police dog can be costly.  Jax and Arras are canine friends and were trained together.  They are both Belgian Malianotis and are 8 years old and 7 years old respectively.  Officer Weir stated that both dogs are nearing retirement age but are keeping up the pace so far.

The event was well-attended and the residents, guests and staff enjoyed visiting with the police officers…human and K-9 alike!
