CountyCouncil2016During Monday’s Marshall County Council meeting, members approved the proposed budget set forth by Sheriff Matt Hassel for the Commissary Fund.

The Sheriff said the rules for use of the commissary fund require any purchases over $1,000 or anything purchased for the good of the department to have council approval.  To make the process more efficient he created a budget looking at expenditures over the last three years.

The council approved the budget with $28,000 in supplies, covering K-9 expenses, vending supplies, prisoner and jail supplies, prisoner meals, employee awards and vehicle maintenance.  The sheriff put $83,500 under services that include: banking fees, inmate services, the Verizon phone bill, equipment contracts, jail repairs, veterinary services, vehicle repair, legal services and training.   The third category was equipment with $7,000 which will help pay for jail equipment and vehicle supplies.  The bottom line of the Commissary Budget for 2016 was approved at $118,500.

The projected income for the commissary fund is $108,821 and comes in by way of inmates paying a 15% mark-up in items purchased and through the companies that provide services to inmates such as Telmate the phone service.
