PLYMOUTH – A new company will be adding a facility that will put two hundred local residents to work.
AMI Industries – who purchased Whitley Products in Plymouth – has purchased a second 100 square foot facility on Walter Glaub Drive as a second operation that will house $3.75 million in new equipment and employ up to 200 workers in the next two and a half years. Derek Spier of the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation and Les Thornton of AMI came before the Plymouth Common Council to ask for a five year personal property tax abatement for the plant.
Thornton explained that the new facility will be a totally independent operation from the current AMI plant on Stanley Drive – the former Whitley Products building. The new plant will manufacture tubing for the automotive industry only. The current plant makes tubing for heavy industrial and agricultural applications.
Thornton explained that the need to separate the two operations was essential since both industries look to suppliers committed to making order deadlines and quality products. Thornton said the company’s two pronged approach was designed to assure all their customers of AMI’s commitment to their specific needs.
The new jobs created will start at $13 per hour. Thornton also told the Council the company was working to recapture more of the business lost when Whitley Products broke up and that while the progress had been slow the hope was that the Stanley plant would also be seeing a significant increase in production.
The Council voted unanimously for the resolution declaring the property purchased as an “economic revitalization area” – the first step to awarding a tax abatement.
