DONALDSON, IN – On Saturday, September 1 Ancilla men’s soccer opened the second weekend of play hosting Muskegon Community College.  The Chargers fell in the second overtime period resulting in a 3-2 loss.
Coach Gallagher remarked, “Muskegon is a high quality opponent and conference foe.  We definitely had our chances and at the end of the day need to finish stronger.”
Muskegon opened the scoring when a shot that was trying to be cleared by a Chargers defender was redirected resulting in an own goal.  Dominic Harris (Indianapolis, IN) capitalized off of some nice combination play from midfielder, Juan Delgado (Encinitas, CA) and striker, Manny Awuku (Hornchurch, UK) that sprung Harris though and he finished the play going into halftime with a 1-1 tie.
Muskegon’s Kody Harrel scored in the 52nd minute after Eric Hilt slotted a ball to the box.  Ancilla did not back down and Ignacio Avilles hit a first time shot from 20 yards out to bring the Chargers back.  Rene Mejia (Canton, MI) played well and made 11 saves on the day.  In the end Muskegon scored in the second overtime period when Nathan Brouard turned a second chance opportunity into the game winner.
Gallagher mentioned, “Again, I thought we played well as a team but still had moments where our level dropped off and Muskegon punished us with timely attacks.  Going forward we have to learn from those mistakes and take the positives as we see a tough side in Owens Community College tomorrow.”
