03/13/12 Culver Military’s High School Varsity hockey team added to the CMA legacy with the school’s 22nd Indiana High School Hockey Association Class 5A championship Sunday afternoon. The Eagles defeated the Columbus Icemen, 6-1, in the Pepsi Coliseum for its 40th win of the season, a new record for wins by any Culver hockey team.

CMA also won the Class 5A title in 2011.

“It has been a very gratifying year with these players,” said coach Jeff Badalich. “They have worked so hard and they closed it out with another state championship and 40 wins.”

Kyle Bartelman led the Eagles with three goals and an assist. Phil  Kreuser and Brock Frazer had a goal and an assist each. Goalie Nick Peterson finished with 11 saves as the CMA defense held the Icemen to just 12 shots. The one goal he gave up was on a power play in the third period.

The Eagles quickly put the game out of reach, scoring three goals in less than three minutes in the first period, then adding a goal in the second, and sandwiching Columbus’ lone score with two more goals.

The Eagles won all three games against Columbus this season, with the the state championship carrying the widest margin. CMA finished with a 40-9-1 record.
