08/22/11 Like other neighboring states, Indiana saw an uptick in its unemployment rate in July. The preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate went from 8.3 to 8.5 percent in July. The U.S. rate declined to 9.1 percent this month. Indiana continues to be significantly below the national average and that of all neighboring states for the sixth month in a row. Private sector employment decreased by 8,200 in July.
“In comparison to our neighbors, Indiana is the only state below 9 percent,” said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “In terms of jobs, the bright spot for the month was an increase in manufacturing, but we saw a tightening across other sectors.”
Taking a look locally you see that Marshall County we see that the unemployment rate is slowly creeping upwards. In April the rate was 9.0. We started to see a slight increase in May when the rate was 9.1, June showed 9.2 while July’s rate increased to 9.3.
Other counties around the area also saw a rise in their unemployment rates. Saint Joseph County went from 9.9 in June to 10.0 in July, Elkhart County increased from 10.2 to 10.6 and Starke County saw an increase from 10.3 to 10.4 with Fulton County following in line like so many others with a raise from 8.6 to 8.7. Kosciusko County held their own remaining at 7.7. Fayette tops the list of 92 counties with a rate of 12.0 while Dubois County is at the bottom with an unemployment rate of 5.6
| The Manufacturing (2,900) sector showed significant employment gains in July. The Trade, Transportation and Utilities (-2,800), Construction (-2,500) and Private Education and Healthcare (-2,200) sectors showed significant decline. Total non-farm employment decreased (-10,100) in July. |
