05/13/11 The Indiana State Police and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation of a two vehicle crash that killed a South Bend couple.

Indiana State Police Master Trooper Michael Gruett say husband and wife, 81 year old Charles A and 82 year old Virginia L. Avery of Locust Road South Bend died as the result of a crash Thursday morning at 11:50.  The accident happened right in front of the ISP Post in Bremen at US 6 and Miami Trail.

The crash occurred when the 2005 Ford Freestyle, driven by Charles Avery that was southbound on Miami Trail failed to yield at US6.  The vehicle pulled into the path of a westbound Volvo semi driven by 52 year old Darrel D. Crooks of Rockville, IN.

Marshall County Coroner Bill Cleavenger said Charles died instantly at the scene of blunt force trauma. Virginia Avery was transported to the Community Hospital of Bremen and then flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend by MedFlight.  Virginia died a short time later from injuries she received in the crash.

Assisting at the accident scene was Tri County Ambulance Service, Bremen Fire, the Indiana State Police, and the Marshall County Coroner’s Office.  The exact cause of the accident is still under-investigation.
