Living on the Land is a two part educational series that explores farming practices and various crop and animal enterprises that can be done on small acreage and other aspects of living in a rural setting. This training series well be held at several locations across Indiana. Marshall County is hosting a site for this program at the Marshall County Extension Office in room 304 of the Marshall County Building, 112 W. Jefferson Street, Plymouth..
Topics that will be covered in the nine week series include assessing physical and person resources, understanding your soil potential and limitations, understand basic production systems you can adopt, utilizing farm equipment, understand crop production basics, choosing a crop enterprise that fits your farm, what livestock could be raised for home and sale, basics on animal husbandry, and visiting area small farms. Should note participants will visit a machinery dealership and tour a successful small farm. This series will be held Monday nights from 6:30 pm to 9 pm starting on Monday, September 27, and concluding on Monday, November 22.
The second part of the educational series will be six sessions held March 3rd through April 7 and will focus on business structures, small farm financial management, managing small farm risks, legal and regulatory issues, marketing what you produce and an additional small farm tour.
There is a fee of $150 for the first participant to cover material costs or $200 for two individuals sharing reference material for each educational series or $250 for an individual or $300 for a couple sharing reference material if want to register for both educational series. This is an excellent program for landowners to learn how to utilize additional land that comes with homes in rural settings for enjoyment and potential for additional income as well.
