06/28/13 The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced Wednesday that one regional artist is among 39 artists throughout the state receiving career development assistance through the agency’s Individual Artist Program (IAP) grants for Fiscal Year 2014.
The IAC this year accepted grant applications from artists in the performing arts for projects in dance, theatre, literature, music, as well as from folk and access artists for projects related to these traditional disciplines. As in years past, artists could request up to $2,000 for career development assistance.
The Region Two grant recipient is Anna Liechty from Plymouth. Her project, “The Confessions of the Huckleberry Queen” is a work of historical fiction in progress. Anna Liechty is researching this legendary woman of Marshall County, Indiana, to verify historical connections between claims made in her 1879 biography and extant primary documents in Indianapolis and Chicago. While the work is grounded in historical reality, the author has chosen to fictionalize the writing in order to explore contemporary issues of gender roles, hypocrisy, sexuality and power.
“Indiana has been home to some of the world’s greatest talents, and we continue to strive to encourage artistic development in our state,” said IAC Executive Director Lewis C. Ricci. “These grants not only help artists advance their careers but provide opportunities for their talents to be shared in their communities through exhibitions, demonstrations, and instructional opportunities.”
Earlier this year volunteer citizen peer panels, convened by the IAC, reviewed more than 70 Individual Artist Program project proposals. The IAP grants were among more than 300 funding recommendations for artists and community-based cultural program providers approved June 21, 2013 during the Commission’s quarterly business meeting in Indianapolis.
