INDOTlogoWhite-out conditions and blowing and drifting snow are causing travel difficulties in INDOT’s Northwest District today. Currently Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Starke, Jasper, Marshall, and Fulton Counties are under a Travel Advisory, meaning unnecessary travel should be avoided if possible due to hazardous conditions. Elkhart County is currently under a Travel Watch, meaning only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations, is recommended. The updated travel list can be viewed here:http://www.in.gov/dhs/traveladvisory.

Dozens of INDOT plow/salt crews are working to clear the way and increase traction on the roads. But white-out conditions and blowing and drifting snow present unique challenges to crews, as roads can re-cover with snow soon after plows pass a stretch of road, due to high winds. The average INDOT plow route can take more than two hours to complete a full cycle. Salt, de-icers, and sand can help between passes, but drivers should not expect clear, dry pavement in this conditions.

Drivers should expect slick and snow-covered roads in the hardest hit areas. Plan to slow down, brake early, leave plenty of room between vehicles, and turn your headlights on. Remember, the posted speed limit is only meant for ideal driving conditions. You should not expect to drive the speed limit when weather like this is present. Please give our INDOT plow crews plenty of room to work if you see them on the road.
