Lions_Club_Marianne PetersMarianne Peters was the guest speaker at the January meeting of the Plymouth Lions Club. Peters is the new Education Coordinator for Marshall County Solid Waste and explained a number of different recycling programs.

The program began in 1991 and has grown to a very large number. Last month 12 tons of recycling was collected from Marshall County. One other very interesting fact presented was the collection of 30 tons of recycling during the Blueberry Festival. Peters stated she felt her job was somewhere between a Scout Mater and a Sanitation Engineer. In fact she has written a book entitled DeClutter For Good: Share Your Stuff and Reclaim Your Life.

Today electronics is a real issue. Indiana’s electronic waste (e-waste) program establishes a network for the collection and recycling of e-waste from Indiana households, small businesses, and K-12 public and charter schools.

All are encouraged to start using curbside pickup to get rid of trash instead of the burn barrel. The service is inexpensive, convenient and most of all, legal. Recycling helps the environment, saving natural resources, keeping reusable materials out of the landfill. Peters plans an E-Newsletter on what recycling they are taking at this time. Anyone interested in receiving that newsletter should contact Marshall County Solid Waste Management with your email address. Peters’ plans are to reach the community through outreach events and teach people what and how to recycle.

In other business the Plymouth Lions Club scheduled a Nelson’s Golden Glow Chicken fundraiser for May 9th with the location to be determined at a later date. Two new Lions Club members were also on hand at the January meeting and will be formally installed at the February meeting.

Melvin Jones was the founder of Lions Clubs International and he once said, ” You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else.” It has been nearly 100 years since Melvin Jones first encouraged people to address the needs of their communities and the world. Lions are about providing service and our strength is directly tied to our members. Anyone interested in joining the Plymouth Lions Club should contact any Lions Club member.
