02/03/14 On Thursday, January 30th at approximately 2:53 P.M. Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Brown was traveling east on 12B Road east of Jarrah Road when he observed a red passenger vehicle off the roadway. Deputy Brown noticed that the vehicle was occupied by a female and that the pole next to the vehicle was broken approximately 15 feet above the ground with extensive damage to the vehicle. Contact was made with Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch Center of Deputy Brown’s location and request for Plymouth EMS to respond to the scene after making contact with female occupant who was complaining of neck pain. REMC was also contacted due to the instability of the utility pole and the extreme winds at the time.
The driver of the Pontiac Sunfire was identified as 52 year old Brenda K. Shepard of Etna Green. She told the officer she was traveling east on 12B east of Jarrah Road when she hit a snow drift and lost control. Sheppard’s vehicle left the south side of the roadway coming to rest on the east side of the utility pole face in the north direction. The driver stated she only remembered hitting the snow drift and spinning but did not remember the impact of hitting the utility pole.
Brenda Shepard was extracted from the vehicle and transported by Plymouth EMS to the Plymouth Airport where she was flown by Medflight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for a head injury. The Marshall County Highway Department was called to assist in plowing the roadway so that the ambulance could make its way to the airport.
Assisting at the scene with Marshall County Sheriff’s Department were Plymouth Fire and EMS, Marshall County Highway Department and Marshall County REMC. Lyons Towing assisted in the removal of the vehicle due to the extensive damage caused by the crash.
