10/24/13 Along with Plymouth and Bourbon Marshall County will look at applying for a federal grant for a second time.
Last year the Marshall County along with the City of Plymouth and Town of Bourbon sought a federal “Brownfield Grant” through the Environmental Protection Agency. A Brownfield site is land previously used for industrial purposes or some commercial uses which has the potential to be reused once it is cleaned up.
EPA’s Brownfield Program provides direct funding for Brownfield assessment, cleanup, revolving loans, and environmental job training. To facilitate the leveraging of public resources, EPA’s Brownfield Program collaborates with other EPA programs, other federal partners, and state agencies to identify and make available resources that can be used for Brownfield activities. In addition to direct Brownfield funding, EPA also provides technical information on Brownfield financing matters.
Last year the county application for the grant was turned down. Joel Markland of Bruce Carter Associates appeared before the Marshall County Commissioners Monday to ask for their permission to re-apply this year.
Markland said that EPA officials informed him last year’s application did not adequately take into account public health issues involved.
The city of Plymouth will act as the lead for the grant again this year.
The Commissioners will consider a resolution to support the grant application at their next meeting on Nov. 4.
