Scam_alertSunday afternoon the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department received several complaints about people being called and being told that they have a tax warrant through Marshall County. The scammers are telling them to go to a store and buy gift cards and give them the codes or Marshall County will come out and arrest them. The number showing on caller ID is the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office phone number. They are then told to call another number to make the payment.

Marshall County will NEVER call you to tell you that you have a tax warrant nor will they ask you to buy any type of card to pay the warrant. If you have a tax warrant you will be sent a letter through the mail and will need to come pay it at the Sheriff’s office with cash, check or money order. A tax warrant is not an arrestable offense and the Sheriff’s Department won’t come to your house.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office saying that you have a tax warrant, hang up immediately. Don’t give them any information. If you receive a call from Marshall County and you question the authenticity, you can call 574-936-3187 to check the authenticity.
